Ea loca, ubi incolae sedebant, theatrum appellabantur. In orchestra tragoediae agebantur et chori cantabant, in scaena autem variae machinae habebantur. Auxilio earum machinarum imprimis dei vel deae in tecto scaenae apparebant. Inde proverbium: “Deus ex machina”.
